I was unlucky enough to be a graduate student in chemistry during the Graduate Employees Union conception, but I was lucky enough to graduate before its inception.

Do East Lansing City Councilmembers believe that students hate them, or is it the other way around? Do the students not understand that MSU and its facilities account for only about 10 percent of the council's business, or is the council still not aware that students believe MSU and its facilities are the only thing keeping East Lansing from being a stoplight and a McDonald's? It seems to us that maybe MSU students and the East Lansing City Council should have a little sit-down to address the beef flying back and forth. Perhaps the students actually would learn the facts about the party-noise violations policy and stop griping.
I am absolutely disgusted by Les Burns' letter "Bush 9/11 ads should be pulled from TV" (SN 3/15). I can't see how any levelheaded person could expect the Sept.
In response to the editorial "Safe Perspectives" (SN 3/15), I would like to say that you're absolutely correct.
To the franchise owners of Roly Poly Sandwiches in East Lansing: Thanks for doing a great service to the City of East Lansing, guys!
This editorial board always has believed that abortion is a choice that should be made between a woman and her doctor, not the government.
In his letter to the editor ("Civil, gay rights separate issues" SN 3/4), James Wade makes the argument that gay rights issues do not equate to those ones faced by African Americans.
Like many citizens, I am appalled to see President George W. Bush take advantage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks for political gain.
Current projected budget deficit: about $500 billion. Cost of the lie-ridden Iraq war: about $100 billion.
Rob Flewelling misses the point in his letter to the editor that Bush was right to send the Marines into Haiti because Haiti "was in the middle of a coup" ("Marines should be involved in Haiti" SN 3/4). The problem is that Bush was essentially participating in the coup by demanding that the country's democratically elected president step down and by sending American soldiers to "escort" him out of the country.
This is in response to James Wade's letter, "Civil, gay rights separate issues" (SN 3/4). First off, even though I don't agree with the letter, I'm happy to see that we finally get to see the other side of the gay rights issue.
On the morning that MSU students watched airplanes flown by madmen topple the World Trade Center buildings and the Pentagon, first blush was an ugly feeling. One student watched the television, rolled into a stuffy Berkey Hall corridor and spoke, when all others were transfixed to the screen and sullenly silent. "Well," that person said.
The State News editorial concerning the teaching assistants who held teach-ins at the Administration Building was not entirely accurate. In "Wrong Rally" (SN 3/3), The State News stated that by holding classes in the Administration Building, the teaching assistants were "sabotaging" the educations of their students.
East Lansing doesn't have a sniper lurking atop Beaumont Tower waiting to target unsuspecting students as they scurry about during the wee morning hours. While there have been some scary things taking place near campus in the last few weeks - one man died when two Lansing residents were shot on Feb.
Despite what breakfast cereals and a horrible Jennifer Aniston movie (pre-nose job) will tell you, leprechauns are not real. As a people, the Irish have had a rough go of it.
As the glimmering pillar of wisdom that is Craig Gunn, he once again is the personification of the shortcomings of this newspaper ("Gay marriage opponents twist Bible's message to fit agenda" SN 3/3). Poor research and poor understanding of this issue seem to etch their way into the mind of my fellow Christian brother.
So, because you, as chemistry graduate students, have better wages and more job security, you don't need the Graduate Employees Union; you can be complacent and let teaching assistants less fortunate than you fend for themselves ("GEU representation not needed for all" SN 3/3). That's like saying you're rich; you don't need any of the public services people pay taxes for, so you should not have to pay taxes.
There has been much ado lately about a small Caribbean nation called Haiti. Perhaps you've read about the rebellion taking place and the president who has resigned (or was he "kidnapped"?). Admittedly, it would be difficult to altogether miss this, considering the amount of press coverage Haiti has received in recent weeks. What has proved disheartening to me, however, is that it took a revolution to put Haiti in the news.
First, the entire basis for your editorial ("Wrong rally" SN 3/3) regarding the Graduate Employees Union organizing the Arts & Letters teach-in is factually incorrect.
Spring break! Whooo! Sparty on! I've totally got mouth herpes! This week, a good number of us will be traveling for yet another spring break.
