Revoke it

In 1990, MSU honored Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe with an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree when he spoke at the university's commencement ceremony. At the time, he deserved the award. He was viewed as a hero and a great revolutionary leader, according to Bill Fletcher Jr., president of the TransAfrica Forum.

COMMENTARY

'Gateway drug' shouldn't be legal

I read the editorial about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to allow prosecution of people using medicinal marijuana ("Weeded out" SN 6/7). I was surprised to read so many illogical thoughts coming from people who are supposed to be in an institution of higher learning.

COMMENTARY

Editorial went on 'anti-Bush' tirade

Your editorial expressing your outrage at the recent 6-3 U.S. Supreme Court decision to allow the prosecution of medical marijuana was way over the top ("Weeded out" SN 6/7). I just wonder why you didn't list the three dissenting judges - or would that have interrupted your anti-Bush tirade?

COMMENTARY

Dig this

As far as we're concerned, the purpose of attending a university is to prepare for one's future career.

COMMENTARY

Bad boys

There's nothing that brings Michiganians together like Detroit Pistons basketball. In the hot, sticky nights of the postseason, casual fans join the base of hard-core super fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills or on couches and bar stools around the state.

COMMENTARY

Construction bad for walkers, bikers

I'm fed up with helping lost pedestrians negotiate their way past the Sparty deconstruction. Poor old Sparty certainly deserves to live out his days in shelter, protected, like George W.

COMMENTARY

Canada trash issue should be resolved

I find the fact that Michigan is even fighting the dumping of Canadian trash within its boundaries proof that politicians are examples of the "Peter Principle," which states that a person is promoted to the height of their incompetence.

COMMENTARY

Weeded out

The U.S. Supreme Court did a huge disservice to the American people Monday by ruling to allow the prosecution of medical cannabis. The 6-3 decision means that the 10 states in which voters balloted for the right to prescribe, use and cultivate cannabis for medical purposes have no legal, federal right to do so.

COMMENTARY

Higher funding

The state House and Senate are currently considering two new higher education budget bills for Michigan's 15 public universities, which would modestly increase funding for MSU.

COMMENTARY

Missing duty

Graduating from high school is a big deal. It's an accomplishment that should be celebrated. But some people go a little overboard with their celebration. Such is the case of Mountain Brook High School, which organized a senior trip to Aruba, with more than 120 (some reports say as many as 138) high school seniors and about seven chaperones from the affluent community outside of Birmingham, Ala.

COMMENTARY

Justice for all

Criminal justice doesn't only mean punishment for misdeeds; equally important is finding the truth about a crime and making it widely known.
