Freshmen still adapting with pace, discipline of college soccer

Rookies, newcomers, young ones — if this was basketball, ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale might even call them “diaper dandies, baby!” But to most, they’re just freshmen. They haven’t been on campus for more than a couple months, but a group of freshmen already have been contributing to the MSU women’s soccer team (7-5-2 overall, 1-5-0 Big Ten).

Pivotal match against OSU ahead for women's soccer

The clock is ticking for the women’s soccer team. The Spartans (7-4-2 overall, 1-4-0 Big Ten) have only six games remaining in the regular season before the Big Ten Tournament. They currently sit a game out of eighth place in the Big Ten — the number of teams allowed into the tournament.

Clem, Gauruder duke out starting goalie spot

Heading into the season, Courtney Clem was the No. 1 goalkeeper for the MSU women’s soccer team. With just six games remaining on the schedule and an important Big Ten match against Ohio State on Saturday, the junior goalkeeper will be competing in practice this week to keep the top spot with sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder.

Women's soccer falls to Iowa in overtime

The MSU women’s soccer team held on for 106 minutes as Iowa got off shot after shot, but couldn’t hang on for four more minutes to make it a draw. The Spartans (7-4-2 overall, 1-4-0 Big Ten) and Hawkeyes (10-3-0, 2-3-0) fought through two overtimes Sunday afternoon on Iowa’s home field, but it was the Hawkeyes who came out with the 1-0 win thanks to a late goal by Iowa midfielder Anne Marie Thomas.

Fiebernitz showing Spartan toughness on pitch

Warrior. Enforcer. Competitor. Those are words that can be used to describe sophomore defender Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz. In only her second year of game action after redshirting her freshman year, Fiebernitz is bringing her competitive nature to the MSU women’s soccer team.

Kovan family enjoys bond over Green and White ties

She grew up a Spartan, and now is the starting midfielder for the MSU women’s soccer team. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Kovan spent her childhood around MSU athletics. Her father, Jeff Kovan, has been a part of the sports medicine program since 1995, and has been mainly working with men’s basketball since 1996, along with other sports.

Women's soccer splits weekend against Minnesota, Wisconsin

The MSU women’s soccer team couldn’t pick up the weekend sweep as the Spartans lost to No. 18 Wisconsin, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans (7-2-2 overall, 1-2-0 Big Ten) won their first Big Ten game in nearly a year Friday against Minnesota, 3-0, but head coach Tom Saxton said tired legs hit the young squad Sunday against the Badgers (7-1-2, 2-0-1).

Women's soccer moves on to Minnesota, Wisconsin

This will be a crucial weekend for the women’s soccer team as they prepare to face Big Ten opponents Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Spartans (6-1-1 overall, 0-1-0 Big Ten) dropped their first match of the season last week against Nebraska, 1-0. With only one game last weekend, MSU got a couple of extra days to rebound and freshen up for this weekend’s slate.

Former stars give back by coaching

When it comes to two of the most successful women’s soccer players in school history, the numbers speak for themselves. Three All-American selections. Five All-Big Ten selections. Forty-nine wins in college. One hundred and seven wins and just one loss in high school. Four consecutive high school state championships. Numerous MSU women’s soccer records.

Women's soccer suffers first loss of season

After a rain delay just a few minutes into the MSU women’s soccer match against Nebraska, the Cornhuskers came out to secure a 1-0 win and hand MSU its first loss of the season. Nebraska freshman Jaycie Johnson gave the Cornhuskers (5-2-1 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) their first goal from 13 yards out in the 12th minute, which turned out to be the difference maker.

'Warrior day in, day out'

Then there was one. Kelsey Mullen entered MSU four years ago along with three others as members of the women’s soccer class of 2014. The class was loaded with top players in the state and country, including Annie Steinlage and Courtney Clem, as well as Chelsey Miller, who decided to focus on academics and quit the team after two years.
