The Michigan State gymnastics team absolutely dominated Penn State on Saturday night to attain its fourth-highest score in program history. MSU took the meet by nearly two whole points with a final score of 197.450-195.475. The Spartans kicked off the meet on the vault, and senior Nyah Smith got the ball rolling with a solid 9.850. Sophomore Gabrielle Stephen held it down in the anchor position in the first event for the Spartans with a huge stuck landing. Stephen scored a career-high 9.925 that secured her vault title. The Nittany Lions put up some beautiful routines on the uneven bars, but a few landing mishaps allowed for the Spartans to pull away with the 49.350-48.875 lead.Stephen made an incredible showing once again on the uneven bars. The sophomore nailed her landing and sent the packed Jenison Field House crowd into a frenzy. Senior Jori Jackard followed Stephen and had an incredible amount of power. Unfortunately, Jackard was a little too powerful on the transition between the bars and was unable to hang on. The senior continued the routine after her fall, but ultimately scored just a 9.200.Taking first place on the uneven bars was freshman Nikki Smith, who had an incredible performance from start to finish to earn a 9.925. The slew of strong performances on the uneven parallel bars from every Spartan gymnast gave MSU its season-high bar score of 49.400.Penn State put on a solid show on the vault with a stand-out performance from freshman Ava Piedrahita to tie Gabrielle Stephen for first place on the apparatus with a 9.925. In the third rotation, the Spartans took to the beam and were faced with a few challenges.Michigan State uncharacteristically struggled with balance checks on many of their beam routines, and freshman Olivia Zsarmani even fell off the beam mid-routine for a low 9.175 score.Stephen showed out on yet another event putting on an all-around clean and energized performance that got her a 9.900.In the anchor spot, junior Baleigh Garcia demonstrated why she deserved that position in the lineup. Garcia put on a strong, gorgeous performance that sent loud cheers through the building. The junior scored a 9.925, and secured the first place position on the balance beam. The Nittany Lions had a complete strong rotation on the floor putting up 48.7 points — just not enough to close in on Michigan State’s 1.325-point lead.Despite junior Delanie Harkness’s rough landing on her first pass, the Spartans dominated on the floor. Sophomore Skyla Schulte led the pack with a huge 9.925 to take the floor title, followed by junior Giana Kalefe with a 9.900 and then Stephens and Smith both with a 9.875.Stephen had an incredible night Saturday and put up some extremely high numbers to take the all-around title with a 39.575.

The No. 13 Michigan State gymnastics team (3-1, 2-0) will be looking to continue its undefeated hot start in conference play as the Spartans travel back home to take on Penn State (7-3, 1-1) Saturday night. The Spartans are coming off a solid win on the road against Maryland last Sunday where they put up their highest road score of the season so far and the 10th-best score in program history (196.950). The meet in College Park started off pretty slow for MSU and left the Spartans down at the end of the second rotation, but their third rotation on the floor quickly shot them back into the lead, which was held until the conclusion of the meet.Against Maryland, Michigan State dominated on every apparatus. The Spartans had the top scores on every single event and sophomore Skyla Schulte had a standout performance to earn her first all-around title this season.Schulte clinched the beam title with a season-high 9.900, freshman Sage Kellerman took the vault title with a 9.900, freshman Nikki Smith was awarded her first-floor title of her career with a 9.900 and junior Delanie Harkness acquired her third straight uneven bars title of the season, also with a 9.900. For the second week in a row, Smith was named Big Ten Freshman of the week after receiving both her first freshman of the week and co-gymnast of the week honors last week following her stellar performance against No. 3 Michigan to take the all-around title. Sophomore Gabrielle Stephen is going into this weekend’s meet tied for 20th in the nation in the individual rankings, making her the highest ranked MSU gymnast at this point in the season. Stephen placed third in the all-around against Maryland with a score of 39.325.The Nittany Lions defeated Rutgers on Monday night where they scored a season-high 196.550 and freshman Ava Piedrahita took first in the all-around. Penn State also scored its season-best on the uneven bars, beam and floor. The Spartans and the Nittany Lions have been going head-to-head in gymnastics since 1965, and Saturday will be the two teams’ 30th meeting. Penn State holds a 23-6 all-time advantage over Michigan State, but the Spartans came out victorious in their meeting last year, outscoring PSU 196.975-196.125. Michigan State women’s basketball (11-10, 3-7) is looking to bounce back from its failed comeback Sunday against Illinois when the Spartans take on Nebraska (12-9, 4-6) on the road Thursday night. The Cornhuskers are going into Thursday on a two-game losing skid and a narrow 76-80 loss to No. 6 Iowa. The Spartans are still without Head Women's Basketball Coach Suzy Merchant after a minor single-vehicle accident on Saturday morning that prevented her from traveling to Champagne with the team on Sunday.Interim Head Coach Dean Lockwood said that the team’s game plan going into the Illinois matchup was fledged out by Merchant before her accident, but Nebraska is a different story.“Illinois was different because we had the bye week and so a lot of that was already in—she had been here, so there weren't a lot of changes in that,” Lockwood said. “This—it's been a little bit different cause obviously she hasn't been here, and we've talked about Nebraska a little bit, certainly—but again, the main thing (is) just making sure that she was okay…I want to make sure she has space but know that we're here for her and we got her back.” In their game against Illinois, senior guard Moira Joiner logged her third straight game in double-digits. Joiner has made a huge impact this season. The senior now has 12 double-digit games this season—including five of the last six. The Spartans uncharacteristically struggled from the three-point line making just 8-27 shots. A large contributor for that .296 three-point percentage was an off game for sophomore guard/forward Matilda Ekh. Ekh was 0-5 from deep, making the road test against Illinois her first game this season without a single three. Michigan State and Nebraska have had pretty similar season so far, and it shows in the resemblance of their records. “They've been a little bit like us,” Lockwood said. “A little bit topsy turvy, but they've been right there in game. We have a ton of respect for this Nebraska team going into this thing, especially at their place where they're tough to beat.” The Spartans and the Cornhuskers have met 14 times in the past, and the Huskers hold the edge with a 9-5 record, but Michigan State has defeated Nebraska in two of their last three meetings.
