This is in response to David Douglass's opinion piece. The First Amendment is not limited to writings that we all agree with. It is intended to be bulwark against silencing dissenting speech. Contrary to what Mr. Douglass stated in his article, hate speech is still protected by the First Amendment and defended by the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU. If burning the symbol our nation is protected speech, then inflammatory rhetoric from Milo Yiannopoulos is also protected. If what the Westboro Baptist Church (has to say) is protected, and what the KKK has to say is also protected, then his comments are also protected. I may not agree with what Mr. Yiannopoulos has to say, but he has the right to say it.

Earlier this week, an Ohio State University student drove his car into a group of pedestrians on campus. He took his attack a step further, wielding a butcher knife and slashing it at the crowd. A total of 11 Ohio State students and faculty members were injured in the attack, and the suspect was killed on scene.

In 2011, former Penn State University defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was charged with 51 counts of child sexual abuse. He was eventually sent to prison for 45 of those charges, namely using a position of power to attract and sexually molest children. Long-time head Penn State coach Joe Paterno was later fired from his position and an investigation showed Paterno likely knew about the charges beforehand and actively covered them up.

The battle of this year’s bums of the Big Ten turned out to be nothing more than a display of pent up frustration finally splintering, then exploding all over Spartan Stadium on Saturday as MSU captured its first win in seven weeks.
