For the second straight night, MSU hockey (5-13-2) vanquished a late third period lead and lost in overtime. This time defeat came at the hands of NMU (7-7-6), which scored a power play goal with 4:15 to go in the third to tie the game at one and scored with 1:22 left in overtime to defeat MSU 2-1.

MSU hockey’s (5-12-2) pursuit for its first Great Lakes Invitational title since 2009 will have to wait another year. The Spartans let a 2-0 third period lead slip through their grasp, as Michigan Tech (11-6-2) came back for a 3-2 overtime victory.

Matthews Arena, home to Northeastern University, opened its doors in 1910 but hadn’t played host to the same school in two different sports until now. With the MSU women's basketball team taking care of business on Friday and the men's basketball team following suite early Saturday, MSU hockey (5-11-2) had a chance for a sweep in the matinee matchup of the Winter Showdown in Boston, Mass., but wasn’t able to make it a clean sweep, losing 2-1 in the night cap.

MSU hockey head coach Tom Anastos might just be cut from the same cloth as Tom Izzo when it comes to building a strong program. Anastos took an Izzo staple in playing tough non-conference tournament atmosphere games early in the year and currently sit at 4-7-2.

North Dakota (11-2-2) was better in just about every facet of the game than MSU hockey (4-6-2) and though a late push by the Spartans made it seem close, it was too little too late, as North Dakota took the game, 3-1.

Whatever sparked MSU’s shooting urge over the weekend, they might need to keep it. MSU (4-3-1) put on another clinic of shooting, skating, and electric plays Saturday, looking like a team finding its stride and exerting confidence in a 7-4 drubbing of New Hampshire (3-4-1).

If MSU (3-3-1) was at all fazed at its 2-3-1 start to the season, they didn’t show it Friday night, as they were able to come away with a 5-0 victory against New Hampshire.
