Mechanical engineering Stephan Freitag poses for a portrait in the IM West Fitness Center pool on April 11, 2024. Freitag was a member of Michigan State University’s swim and dive program before the program got cut in 2020, while he was a freshman. 2020 was MSU swim and dive’s 99th year of being a program at the university. As a part of his homage to the team, Freitag tattooed 99 in roman numerals along the side of his chest. He is a member of the last class of swimmers graduating from MSU this year. “I would not have been able to do what I am doing today, if we didn’t get cut,” Freitag said. “One door closes, another one opens, and a better one opened.” This summer, Freitag will be interning at Boeing in Huntington Beach, California in customer support operations.
