Merchant should be a household name
The battle between No. 11 MSU and No. 23 Penn state for first place in the Big Ten wasn’t really much of a battle.
From the 6:20 mark to the 2:30 mark in the first half, the score stalled at 19-18 as both teams bricked shot after shot and even missed open layups.
It was brutal. Only three players on Penn State even had points at halftime.
However when the Spartans finally busted out of their slump they busted out in a big way.
A 13-0 run helped the Spartans run away with the game. With the 60-49 win, they now hold a 3-14 record all-time at Bryce Jordan Center.
Definitely an unimpressive record, however it’s under MSU head coach Suzy Merchant that the Spartans have recorded all three of those wins.
As the Spartans grabbed hold of first place in the conference, it has never been more evident the job Merchant has done with this program.
This season the women certainly are making that transition for good to great.
It started with the injury to redshirt freshman center Madison Williams, which gave Merchant a couple weeks to completely reshape the entire season game plan.
Now tonight, when the team met the conference’s best offense and the Spartan seniors combined for only 13 points, the job Merchant did conducting her team was unreal.
In her fourth year as head coach, she already has managed to match the best start in program history and has a chance to replace the five-time defending Big Ten champions.
If this were men’s basketball, Suzy Merchant would be a household name.
