Ranked No. 1 in the country, MSU hockey stonewalled Lindenwood Friday night in a shutout. Night two of the series on Sunday saw a similar outcome.
In their second consecutive shutout victory, the Spartans completed a holiday weekend sweep of the Lions with a 2-0 victory on Sunday, clinching sophomore backup goaltender Luca Di Pasquo’s first collegiate shutout.
"I thought we probably played better tonight, even if you look at the scoresheet, then we did (Friday) night," head coach Adam Nightingale said postgame.
MSU's esteemed sophomore netminder Trey Augustine stopped all 29 shots sent his way on Friday night. Di Pasquo stepped between the pipes less than 48 hours later with a starting nod from Nightingale.
After outshooting the Lions 56-29 on night one of the series, MSU limited Lindenwood to 14 total shots in game two. The Spartans fired 93 shots on the weekend to the Lions' 43, a 50-shot difference in just two games.
The increasingly familiar "Spartan hockey" dominated play on Sunday, and the mismatch was clear. MSU outshot the Lions 13-4 early on with one Spartan goal coming off a wrist shot from sophomore forward Gavin O'Connell for his third of the season. O'Connell's line featuring junior forwards Charlie Stramel and Isaac Howard produced eight of the team's 37 shots.
Though the scoring for MSU was limited through the second period, the third brought an insurance goal for the Spartans, coming from their fourth line, which has been rolling since the beginning of Big Ten play. That success extended past conference opponents this weekend.
Sophomore forward Tommi Mannisto scored his first goal of the season in night one of the series, and freshman forward Mikey DeAngelo continued the young line's momentum with the second goal of the night in game two. The assist coming from fellow freshman forward Shane Vansaghi, the 6-foot-2 right winger extended his point streak to eight games.
Back-to-back shutouts
After shutting out the Lions on night one with 29 saves from Augustine, Di Pasquo shined on Sunday to earn back-to-back MSU shutouts for the first time since March 2015.
"It feels good," Di Pasquo said. "You want to be part of the team more than just backing up. It feels great to get some starts, get some touches and really contribute in that way."
Nightingale said he and his staff planned for Di Pasquo to start Sunday, and the entire program believes in the goalie's ability to contribute.
"We had kind of mapped it out that this would be a good game to get him in there," Nightingale said. "He has done a heck of a job in practice. He’s ready to go and that is his job, to be ready when his number is called."
With the 2-0 win, MSU's winning streak extended to nine games, tying the program's longest since the 2000-2001 season.
MSU will hit the road for the remainder of the month, starting with a road trip to Madison, Wisconsin for a series against the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7. Both games are slated for 8 p.m.
