As MSU men’s soccer player Shion Soga laced his cleats for another training session, a question lingered in his mind: "What’s next?"

Many collegiate-level talents come and go, however, Soga has always thought about that next step.

No matter the job, Soga wants to make a professional career within the sport.

"I have been playing soccer since I was 10. Soccer has always been part of my life," Soga said. "As I grew up with soccer, I never thought about my future without it."

Hailing from Aichi, Japan, Soga went to Novi High School in Michigan. He transferred to MSU from the University of South Florida this offseason.

While still a senior at MSU, the midfielder has begun to think about the next step of his life.

"Of course I’m here to try and be a pro. As many of the other options, I’m very intrigued by coaching, and trying to coach future soccer players," Soga said. "I like to dedicate my knowledge and experience to future players and develop them."

The Japan native has already started this process.

"I have coached a couple times; small kids and 15-year-old boys," Soga said. "It has always been an experience to me to get me more into a coaching job. . . (soccer) has always been a part of my life, and that’s the part I want to do outside from being a pro."

The sport is a way of life for Soga. He never wants to leave its realm. Soga said his motivation to become a coach stems from a number of influential coaches he's had throughout his career.

As Soga's love of the game is quite serious, he said the enjoyment factor can often be taken for granted. In fact, some of the most fun he's had as an athlete was in the early stages of his soccer career.

"I actually started futsal before soccer when I was 10, up until I was 12 years old. . . (the coach) made it fun kicking the ball around," Soga said.

The passion for soccer is clear for Soga. He has found his calling and is focused on playing the season he has left at MSU. One thing's for sure: the sport has his love through and through.

"I’m trying to stay in soccer, whether it’s coaching, whether it’s playing, or in an office where it’s doing all the paperwork, as long I stay in the soccer industry I’ll be happy," Soga said.
