With a new MSU Hockey season rounding the corner, the announcement of its team captains came Tuesday morning.

The four captains: forward Red Savage, the lone senior of the group, and three juniors -- forwards Karsen Dorwart and Tiernan Shoudy and defenseman Matt Basgall.

A new senior captain, Savage is entering his second year with the Spartans. In 2023, he transferred from Miami University of Ohio, where he played with his brother, Ryan Savage, for two years. Along with his brother, Savage followed in the footsteps of his NHL retiree father, Brian Savage, who also played at Miami.

Prior to Savage’s college career, he competed locally at the United States National Team Development Program in Canton, Michigan, and was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL draft to the Detroit Red Wings.

In East Lansing for his junior campaign, Savage put up 10 goals and 17 assists, nearly doubling his point total at Miami in just one season.

Basgall was an alternate captain during the 2023-2024 season, tallying one goal and a career-high 14 assists during the season. Dorwart was also elevated from his alternate captain role last year, where he had a career-high 15 goals and 34 points, finishing second in the Big Ten in short-handed goals.

Rounding out the group is Shoudy, who held the team's best faceoff win percentage last season while scoring four goals and assisting on 12.

“These four embody what it means to be a Spartan,” head coach Adam Nightingale said in a release. “They will do a great job in leading our program.”
