The Michigan State student section cheers on the volleyball team at the Breslin Center on Oct. 6, 2023. The Spartans lost 3-1.

Nearly one year ago on Oct. 14, 2022, Michigan State volleyball fans broke the program record for attendance by nearly 500 people with a total of 7,326 fans.

So this year, when the Spartans hosted No. 2 ranked Nebraska, fans went all out.

8,789.

The new attendance record set at last night's game surpassed the previous record by 1,463 people.

The student section was packed tight with volleyball fanatics, local community volleyball teams and students participating in the Izzone campout across the street at Munn intramural field who were offered free access with their campout registration wristbands.

The Spartans put up a fight early for the ambitious crowd but were ultimately overpowered by the Cornhuskers, losing the match 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-11).

Michigan State volleyball head coach Leah Johnson showed her appreciation for the fans after the game and also spoke on potential future opportunities with Izzone fans.

“It was phenomenal," Johnson said. "The Izzone was here. We had seven different community teams and our regular fans, and then some showed. They’re sitting in the upper deck, it’s phenomenal. I love our fans for it. I hope the Izzone wants to make something special out of volleyball’s student section Rally Row.”

The Spartans will look to quickly recover from the loss as they play their second game of the weekend. The team will face off against Northwestern on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
