Grand Rapids – Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees approved increasing fines incurred for violating parking rules on campus at their meeting Friday, June 16.
The increase, which will take effect immediately, raises meter violations from $15 to $20, disabled parking violations from $100 to $115 and all other infractions – such as parking in campus lots without proper passes – from $25 to $40.
This change will also end the provision discounting tickets paid within 24-hours.
MSU Police and Public Safety Spokesperson Dana Whyte told The State News the increase will raise funds for further physical security measures on campus, including additional GreenLight emergency phones.
Even with the increase, MSU’s fees are low when compared to the rest of the Big Ten conference, according to data included in the proposal.
