Flowers and candles, covered in ice and snow, fill the ground alongside The Rock on Farm Lane on Feb. 17, 2023. The flowers have been collecting at The Rock in remembrance of the three students that lost their lives in the mass shooting on Feb. 13, 2023.

International student John Hao has been identified as one of the five Michigan State University students who remain hospitalized after the mass shooting on Monday, Feb. 13. A GoFundMe was started by his roommate to raise for medical costs.

Hao’s close friend and roommate, hospitality business sophomore Argent Qian, organized the GoFundMe. Qian said Hao is currently paralyzed from the chest down after a bullet severed his spinal cord and injured his lungs.

"As he remains stabilized in the ICU with a breathing tube inserted in his lung, his family is facing significant financial burdens," Qian said in the GoFundMe's description.

Qian also said Hao’s parents have traveled to East Lansing to be with their son, despite not speaking English and having no way of earning any income while they remain in the US. All funds, according to Qian, will allow them to remain in-country while their son recovers.

"John and his family are thankful for the outpouring of support from the MSU community," Qian said in a statement.

Hao is a sports enthusiast with “dreams of traveling the globe and having a career in sports management," said Qian on the GoFundMe page. He is also a leader in the MSU Chinese student community, said Qian.

“However, his ongoing medical and physical needs, will also create a significant financial burden for his family and make it almost impossible to achieve his dreams,” Qian said. “As his close friend, I am reaching out to you to help him achieve the life he deserves.”

Sparrow Hospital senior media relations specialist Corey Alexander said he could confirm that four survivors remain in critical condition, while one survivor is stable.
