MSU women's cross country secures Big Ten Championship

October 28, 2022

Michigan State women's cross country secured a second consecutive Big Ten Championship with the help of two top-five finishes from junior Jenna Magness and Senior India Johnson. The Spartans' men's cross country team finished fourth, with sophomore James Uhlenberg being their lone top-ten finish at seventh.

Michigan State's women's cross country team secured the 2022 Big Ten Championship Friday at the University of Michigan Golf Course.

Not only is it MSU's third Big Ten title in four years, but it's the second for Michigan State Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau.

The women have now placed first nine times in program history.

"It's unreal. I keep pinching myself. I couldn't be more proud of the group," Breznau said. "We have 40 women on the roster and we told them at the beginning of the season that it was going to be a 40- woman job all the way up until the end of the season. Everyone has played a role and everyone has a part. We told them today if they ran with heart they could do something really special, and they came out and did that."

The Spartans emerged with 78 points, with Michigan placing second with 86 points and Wisconsin third with 94 points.

Graduate student Katie Osika placed second overall and secured a personal best of 20:04 to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors. Osika was followed by junior Makenna Veen, who placed ninth with a 20:27 time. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes finished 20:38 for 15th place overall.

All of the Spartans placed under 75th out of 149 total participants.

"It was a phenomenal crowd here today. Our track and field team, the rest of the cross country roster, parents, and alumni came out to support the program. We really felt the Spartan love and Spartan community," added Breznau. "It goes a long way, not just for performance, but it means a lot to the men and women because they work really hard at this and they deserve every bit of this. I'm really proud of everyone today."

The Michigan State men's team placed fourth in the competition, with Wisconsin taking home the championship. Senior CarLee Stimpfel placed fifth with two other Spartans placing inside the top 20.

MSU will head to Terre Haute, Indiana on Friday, Nov. 11 to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
