What makes Horrocks so popular? The history of Lansing's favorite market

September 26, 2022

From live music to everyday grocery shopping, Horrocks Farmers Market offers a wide range of services, including food trucks, garden centers, a gelato business, floral arrangements, a candy counter and even a pizzeria.

Horrocks has gained a longstanding reputation for its product and atmospheric quality for over 60 years.

The market began in 1959 as a fruit stand and Christmas tree farm, but it quickly became a full-time operation, featuring a wide selection of produce and deli products.

“Because my grandma and grandpa were farmers, the money they had was just the money they had, so they had their savings for the winter to get them to the spring,” Venus Horrocks, founder Jerald Horrocks' great-grandson, said. “My grandpa comes home and tells my grandma, ‘Hey, I spent all of our savings on Christmas trees and a little lot on Saginaw and we’re going to sell Christmas trees,' and my grandma sat down and cried.”

In the market's first year of business, the Horrocks family of five was able to spend the winter in Florida. Since then, the Horrocks company has been expanding and increasing in size, stock and quality.

Two other Horrocks locations have opened since the original – one in Battle Creek in 1992 and another in Kentwood in 2002.

But what makes Horrocks Farmers Market so famous?

Lansing residents keep coming back to the market, primarily because of its ambiance, keeping the parking lot packed at all hours of the day no matter the weather.

The interior's rustic build and its lingering scent of freshly roasted coffee blends provide customers with a relaxing atmosphere to explore the market's over 70,000 square feet.

Horrocks has 90 different coffee blends and dozens of different candies to choose from.

Further, the market has a tavern offering shoppers refreshing drinks. Shoppers can stop for a slice of pizza or stop by the self-serve soup and salad bar for a light meal too.

Venus's first time working at the market was at nine years old and he continues working there in the summers.

“I love the popcorn department… I think snacking-wise, popcorn department is the place to go,” he said. “It’s amazeballs.”

Horrocks is located in Lansing at 7420 W. Saginaw Hwy. and is open every day of the week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
