East Lansing declares snow emergency

Municipalities and agencies are preparing for Wednesday’s snowstorm. This morning, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning as heavy snowfall is expected to start around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning. Snowfall accumulations of seven to 12 inches is expected.

Here is what is expected in the next few days:

Tuesday Night: Rain changing into snow, with accumulations of up to an inch. Low: 27 degrees.

Wednesday: Snowfall is expected to begin around 2 a.m., accumulating between 2-4 inches of snow. Streets and sidewalks will be slippery. Temperatures to reach 30 degrees with winds in the teens.

Thursday: Show showers with accumulations up to eight inches. High: 30 degrees. Winds up to 15 mph. Night: Snowfall will decrease with cloudy skies. Low: 16 degrees. Snow accumulating to one inch.

The cities of East Lansing and Jackson have both declared snow emergencies due to the storm forecasted to impact mid-Michigan. The emergency goes into effect at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning and ends at 6 a.m. Feb. 4.

Free parking will be available in Downtown East Lansing’s parking garages during the emergency. On-street parking is prohibited in both cities.

In Jackson, cars that block snow plows and salt trucks will be towed with a $100 fine. Drivers can park their cars in the Consumers Energy Headquarters parking lot, located off S. MLK Drive and S. Cooper Street.

CATA bus routes have not announced any detours or changes in service. The Transit app will have real-time departure data beginning on Feb. 7.
