The East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation and Arts, or ELPRA plans to partially reopen the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, or ELHCC, beginning Sept. 21, according to a statement from ELPRA.

The preliminary plan follows three phases, citing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Executive Orders 2020-175 and 2020-176 as guidelines.

Community members will be required to participate in a health screening and wear face coverings within the facility upon reopening, the statement said. However, face coverings will not be required when swimming or in locker room showers.

The statement said temperatures will be taken during the health screening. Additionally, patrons will be required to complete a questionnaire, Director of ELPRA Tim McCaffrey said.

Phase one

The ELHCC fitness center and gymnasiums will reopen on Sept. 21. These facilities will only be used for socially distant activities, according to the statement.

During this phase, drop-in competitive sports will not be permitted, the statement said.

Occupancy limits will be monitored and community members are encouraged to make reservations by calling 517-333-2580.

Primarily, ELHCC will be used for remote learning programs for elementary school children at this time, the release said.

Phase two

Swimming pool and locker facilities will reopen with limited occupancy Sept. 28, the release said. Community members are encouraged to make reservations.

Swim classes will also resume at this time for ELPRA and East Lansing Prime Time. East Lansing Prime Time offices will also reopen to the public during this phase, according to the statement.

Phase three

Beginning Nov. 2, classroom reservations will open for community groups, the statement said.

Initially, hours for the ELHCC will be from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Community members are encouraged to monitor the center's website for pool hours, the statement said.

"This partial reopening is consistent with what we believe we can do with the current and relevant executive orders," McCaffrey said. "As more opportunities become available for reopening, we'll do more reopening provided we believe we can do it in a responsible, safe and healthy manner for our community members."

The statement said the preliminary plan is subject to change.
