East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows is sworn in on Nov. 21, 2017 at the 54B District Court.

Mark Meadows was unanimously re-elected as the mayor of East Lansing at a special city council meeting Tuesday night.

This is Meadows' second consecutive term as East Lansing's mayor after previously serving in the position from 1997 to 2005. He resigned from council in 2006.

“It means that we continue sort of in the same vein that we have before,” Meadows said. “I think we’ve had a pretty efficient way of dealing with issues in the community. It’s not just the mayor, it’s the entire council. This has been an extraordinary council. They work really well together.”

Councilmember Aaron Stephens was elected to his first term in November, but Meadows is confident that he will work well the the existing members

"I know Aaron will fit in perfectly with the type of discussions that we’ve had in the past,” Meadows said. “Sometimes we kind of beat each other up, privately, in public, we’ve finally reached the spot where I think we can all agree. Most of our decisions are 5-0 votes and part of it is we’re all willing to compromise just to move the city forward.”

Councilmember Erik Altmann was unanimously elected as the new mayor pro tem.

“I am very excited, although I see it as an administrative position,” Altmann said. “I’m going to be the one to stand in and run meetings if the mayor’s not available.”

All council members are equal in the amount of power they have, so the new title doesn’t mean more power. The mayor is the only one with slightly more power, Altmann said.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Altmann said. “It’s going to interesting to run the meetings. We’ll see how that goes. … I hope (Meadows) sticks around and it’s never an issue. But if it is, I’ll be ready.”

A regularly scheduled city council meeting was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday following the elections.
