Update 4:33 p.m.
MSU spokesperson Jason Cody confirmed that phishing emails were sent to 1,500 people at MSU.
However, the email attachments were not malicious, instead they directed people to another website where it would try to get people to upload personal information, Cody said.
"The email sender and the phishing page were immediately blocked by MSU," Cody said. "They were able to prevent anyone from being the victim."
The emails were removed from all central email accounts by IT Services, Cody said.
MSU will "probably not" conduct an investigation into this phishing attempt because the university is constantly under attack from attempts like this and there are cyber security systems in place to help prevent these issues, Cody said.
A fraudulent email claiming to be from Lou Anna K. Simon is being sent to MSU faculty and staff, according to MSU Police.
MSUPD is asking recipients to not click links in the email or open files attached to it because it is a scam.
MSU spokesperson Jason Cody and MSUPD Capt. Doug Monette could not be reached for comment.
