MSU student cited for possession of prohibited weapons

February 8, 2017

Business-preference freshman Samuel Wei appeared in 54B District Court on Feb. 8 for a pretrial hearing for the possession of prohibited weapons on campus.

On Dec. 16, 2016 MSU police were dispatched to North Hubbard Hall to retrieve an air soft gun in the possession of Wei. The responding officer entered Wei's room to secure the air soft pistol sitting on a desk. Once the officer entered the room, he observed "a pink stock of a rifle BB gun on the floor." The officer secured the rifle and entered the room again. While securing the pistol, he saw a MP5 BB gun on the floor and secured both guns.

The responding officer met with Wei at the police department. Wei admitted to owning three BB guns and he said "he only has them because it's his hobby." Wei also said he only fires the guns inside and they have never been removed from his room.

Wei was released with a citation for MSU weapons ordinance 18.01, which states "Except as permitted by state law regulating firearms, no person shall possess any firearm or weapon anywhere upon property governed by the Board (of Trustees). Persons residing on property governed by the Board shall store any and all firearms and weapons with the Department of Police and Public Safety."

On Jan. 9, Wei was arraigned and pled not guilty. His bond was set at $250, he met the bond and was released the same day.

Wei will appear in court on March 17 for a plea and sentencing.

Wei's lawyer did not respond for comment at the time of publication.
