Dogs go for a dip at East Lansing Family Aquatic Center

September 12, 2016

Overcast skies didn't put a damper on the dog swim at the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center.

More than 200 dogs and their owners closed out the summer season with a dog swim.

"On Facebook we had 150 attending, which is quite a few," team leader Emma Henry said. "The event is three hours long, so we're expecting people to come in waves."

Community members were excited about the swim. East Lansing resident Kathryn Stein brought her dog, Charlie, to the aquatic center to cool off with friends.

“Charlie is 12, he came with two friends, two labs, Hippo and Grace," Stein said. "He just enjoys it out here with the other dogs."

The swim benefited both the dogs and their owners.

“It gives us a chance to tire out our dog, we've got a super overactive German Shepherd," former MSU football player Darien Harris said. "It’s hard to tire her out. Bringing her to something like this allows her to have a lot of fun without us doing too much.”

This might not be the aquatic center's last dog swim.

"Thank you to everyone for coming out and supporting our event," Henry said. "Hopefully we can do it in the future, and it becomes a tradition for our pool."
