Anne Holton, wife of democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine, held a Moms for Hillary Roundtable event at the Red Cedar Cafe Wednesday morning.
The former Virginia secretary of education met with a group of Michigan mothers, consisting of activists and professionals, who together spoke about campaign issues through the lens of their experience as mothers.
Holton shared stories about democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton from the campaign trail and said why she admires the former secretary of state as a wife and mother.
“It’s always great to get folks from the campaign to come in and really connect with voters and talk about the important issues that are on their minds, and how to get people excited, it really helps spread the awareness of what the candidate’s positions are, what their values and their priorities are,” Chong-Anna Canfora, director of development at the Historical Society of Michigan, said.
Canfora, a Lansing mother of two and MSU alumna, helped moderate the discussion.
“It’s clear to me that Secretary Clinton’s priorities are on families, working families, children and the issues that really concern moms these days,” Canfora said.
She said she hopes her children, ages 5 years old and 7 years old, will one day attend MSU.
Jarnell Perkins, general manager at the Red Cedar Cafe, said he was glad the campaign chose the restaurant for the round table.
“It feels great, me and my whole crew here, we’re excited,” Perkins said. “I’m happy that she chose to be here.”
Holton said the discussion helped her gain a better understanding of the campaign’s supporters.
“These were really remarkable women who are juggling, doing the multitasking thing that moms do, having a lot of passionate things they care about, including their kids, but really community and making a difference,” Holton said. “It was a treat to be with them.”
