MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon will speak and answer questions from the Associated Students of Michigan State University at the association's second general assembly meeting next week. ASMSU discussed the upcoming meeting with president Simon as well as the possible elimination of the ASMSU Vice President for Special Projects position at their first general assembly meeting of the semester Jan. 15.
“If you’re on the assembly, you’re clearly there for a reason,” ASMSU Vice President for Governmental Affairs Bryn Williams said.“I think people should ask questions that matter to them. I think President Simon will be more than willing to address those without beating around the bush.”
Williams said ASMSU communicates frequently with the administration and they’re very receptive to the things ASMSU wants to talk about.
“When we approached President Simon to ask her if she would speak at our assembly meeting, honestly I was a bit surprised that she was as excited as she was about it,” Williams said. “I think there’s a desire on her part to understand a bit more what your average student is thinking about all these important issues on campus.”
In addition, a resolution was approved at last night’s committee meeting to eliminate the ASMSU Vice President for Special Projects position.
Vice President for Internal Administration Jason Porter, the creator of the resolution, said the position was disposable because of its redundancy — most of its functions were or could be handled by other existing ASMSU positions.
“One issue we were finding is the VP for Special Projects overlapped with a lot of other positions within ASMSU,” Porter said.
Eliminating the position would save ASMSU, and by proxy student taxpayers, $8,910 annually.
The last Vice President for Special Projects, Molly McGinnis, officially resigned the position on Jan. 1 to work as a resident assistant. In the position’s three-year existence, no VP for Special Projects has fully completed their term in office.
ASMSU President Domonique Clemons said there are currently too many executive leaders within ASMSU, which can prevent the association from getting results as strong personalities collide.
President Simon’s appearance and determining vote on the resolution to will occur at the general assembly at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Student Services.
