Student reflects on bike trip for a cause

October 7, 2015

This past summer, Catherine Polgar, a sustainable parks, recreation and tourism junior, biked across the country to make a difference.

Polgar biked for the non-profit organization Bike & Build, which raises money and awareness for affordable housing in the United States. She was a member of a 32 person group.

"I didn't really know much about the affordable housing cause before I went on Bike & Build," Polgar said. "It's such an important cause and it affects a lot of people in our country."

The bike journey began on June 15 in Portland, Maine, and her bike group arrived in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Aug. 31.

Polgar said the group stopped in small towns along the 4,000 mile trek in order to help rebuild communities and create housing options for the poor. She said the bikers participated in 14 build days through non-profits like Habitat for Humanity.

"It's a really cool way to see the U.S., because you're stopping in very small towns," Polgar said. "So it's a great way to see what America really is, as a country."

Polgar said each biker raised around $4,500 for affordable housing prior to going on the trip.

“We are deeply proud of riders like Catherine,” Justin Villere, Bike & Build’s director of operations and development, said.

Polgar said there were times on the trip where she was physically and mentally drained but had to keep persevering.

“Most Bike & Builders actually are not hardcore cyclists or builders when they first sign up; we strive to engage young people with a passion for service and adventure,” Polgar said.

Students who are interested in going on a 2016 Bike & Build trip can apply to be riders on apply.bikeandbuild.org, applications will be available Nov. 1.

"You develop really deep bonds with people because your going through all of this physical, mental, emotional struggle together and it's something you will never forget it," Polgar said.

Polgar said she made lifetime friendships through her ride, all while helping those in need.

"Those people will always be in your life," Polgar said.
