ELPD investigating trend of stolen mopeds

June 23, 2015

The East Lansing Detective Bureau is investigating a string of stolen mopeds, East Lansing police Lt. Steve Gonzalez said.

"We've had quite a few of them in the last few weeks," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said it seems every year during the summer, the city sees an increased number of stolen mopeds. He also said when the police can catch one person in the act, that case can be tied back to some of the other stolen moped cases.

"A bulk of the stolen vehicle complaints involve stolen mopeds," Gonzalez said. "Our (detective bureau) is tracking and working these cases. Quite (often) when we have incidents like this occur they are related, but we have yet to determine that in this instance."
