On December 3rd, MSU will face Notre Dame on the basketball court for the first time in 35 years. The two teams are set to play during the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge this year.
In the 28 years that the series has been played, MSU has never faced
Notre Dame. In fact, The Fighting Irish and the Spartans have not met on
the court since the regional finals game of the 1979 NCAA tournament.
During the game, MSU beat Notre Dame, 80-68, and went on to clinch the national championship.
"It’s great to renew a natural rivalry, one that has provided some
great games in both football and basketball over the years," MSU
head coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. "With the two schools separated by
just a couple of hours, I know this matchup will excite both of our fan
bases."
The challenge, which pits 14 teams from the Big Ten against 14 from the ACC, has been a tradition since 1999. The Spartan basketball team has participated in the event since its inception.
The two teams are scheduled to in South Bend, IN. No time or network has been determined.
