MSU Spring Arts and Crafts Show to celebrate 50th year

May 15, 2014

Summer is right around the corner and the communities of East Lansing and MSU will celebrate the season with the 50th annual MSU Spring Arts and Crafts Show this weekend.

The show will encompass the area surrounding the MSU Union and will be is free to the public.

Sponsored annually by the University Activities Board, or UAB, the MSU Spring Arts and Crafts Show is consistently held the weekend before Memorial Day and in conjunction with the East Lansing Art Festival.

The crafts show will draw people to the East Lansing community and into the outdoors just in time for the height of the season, rain or shine, UAB Assistant Manager Stephanie Calloway said.

Calloway said UAB's show, combined with the East Lansing Art Festival, provides attendees with an expansive collection of arts and crafts. She said although many people assume the events are not separate, they are held on the same weekend to mutually benefit each other.

"Both shows are bringing people to the area," Calloway said.

The craft show will host 336 booths from 316 vendors. The artists will sell hand-crafted items in the show, including everything from henna artists to children's toys.

Calloway said although the show strives for variety, jewelry vendors are popular. Other wares include paintings, photography, clothing, candles, furniture and aromatherapy.

"It’s a beautiful campus," Calloway said. "It’s just that time of year when you hope that the weather is nice."

According to local forecasts, Saturday will come with a chance of precipitation throughout the day, but on Sunday the rain is forecasted to stay away.
