Chandler Crossings soon to get new renovations

Changes are coming to Chandler Crossings, both in the form of management and new apartment renovations.

The Woodlark Companies, Westpac Campus Communities and Torchlight Investors purchased Chandler Crossings from Long Wharf Real Estate Partners LLC in a multi-million dollar acquisition that was executed Jan. 31.

“This is one of the most important transactions in Woodlark’s 11-year history,” Ari Rosenblum, owner of The Woodlark Companies, said in a statement. “We are also actively looking at more projects close to Michigan State which we believe to be one of the top student-housing markets in the U.S. due to its size, quality and growth potential.”

Director of Marketing for The Woodlark Companies Lori Webb said discussions about purchasing the Chandler properties began when Woodlark personnel visited and toured the properties in October.

“(It) just was a good opportunity for us,” Webb said. “(The) property has a good reputation.”
The companies plan to invest $9 million to renovate the amenities in each apartment, including new stainless steel appliances, upgraded counter tops, new wood flooring and a flat-screen TV, which will first be done to The Club.

Students can start leasing the upgraded units for an additional $75 per month. Anyone currently with a lease can choose to update to the new units at the end of their lease.

Anyone uninterested in an upgraded unit can choose to live in a standard apartment.

International relations senior Jim Racine, who lives in The Club, said he wouldn’t want to live in a new unit.

“Probably not for 75 bucks a month,” he said. “I’m already paying a good amount of money. Maybe if they had like dryers that worked every time or (an) oven that didn’t fall apart.”

Other additions include a yoga studio in The Club, coffee bar lounges in each of the apartment complexes and more cardio equipment in the fitness center.

Interior design junior Brooke Jesue said she might consider moving from her apartment in University Village to an upgraded unit, even for $75 more a month.

“I (will) pay for more if there are significant upgrades compared to the non-renovated unit,” she said.

Major changes also will be coming to the Chandler Crossings Downtown Leasing Center, 309 E. Grand River Ave., where it will be overhauled into a sport lounge.

Webb said the new office will add four flat screen TVs and three living rooms so students can relax and watch TV. There also will be three additional Mac computers added for residents to use.

Leasing information still will be available at the office.
