Keg law reaches one-year anniversary

October 31, 2012

A year ago today, a law removing the anonymity of keg buyers went into effect.

Since the “keg law” took effect last November, buyers are required to tag their keg with their name, phone number, address and driver’s license number. If the tag is removed prior to returning the keg, the buyer will not receive the deposit money back. Stores selling kegs can be fined for not properly distributing the tags.

The law also changed the severity of the crime for those operating a blind pig — such as party hosts who charge “$5 a cup” for alcohol — from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Removing the tag can carry a penalty of up to three months in jail and a $500 fine.
