Youth must show up to polls

Young voter turnout in 2008 rose to 51.1 million, making it the highest rate ever. Two million more young people voted than in 2004.

However, this year, politicians — bent on manipulating the system for their own political gain — are trying to roll back these gains and, simultaneously, weaken our democracy.

States such as Ohio and Pennsylvania have passed legislation to limit the votes of minorities, the elderly and college students, such as you and me.

Recently, I participated in an event through Michigan Education Association, or MEA, handing out flyers to my fellow peers on campus.

It is shocking to me how many people feel it is unimportant to vote. Inside the voting booth, we all are the same.

We all have the same say. Voting represents our civic duty, and it’s a responsibility we take on with pride as citizens of the United States.

No one can rob you of your voice. But in order to participate in our great democracy and have your voice heard, every eligible voter must understand the rules in his or her state and show up at the correct polling place.

Your vote not only strengthens our nation, but also the wonderful democracy that keeps it moving forward.
