State Rep. Bob Genetski, R-Saugatuck, was sentenced to pay more than $1,000 in fines and complete community service Oct. 24 as his drunken driving trial came to a close, according to an article from MLive.

Genetski — who serves as chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education — was arrested on campus Jan. 19 by MSU police for drunken driving.

Judge David Jordon sentenced Genetski to pay about $1,100 in fines and complete 40 hours of community service in the next 150 days, according to the article.

Prior to the sentence, Genetski was found guilty during a jury trial in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court after a lengthy examination of blood alcohol content procedures related to Genetski’s blood tests.

In previous court sessions, Genetski pleaded innocent to drunken driving. On Wednesday, he admitted responsibility for his actions and said he learned a lot from the drunken driving incident, according to the article.

Jordon said because Genetski submitted a thoughtful list of community service ideas and showed no risk of repeating the crime, Genetski’s punishment was mild, according to the article.
