With the conclusion of New York Fashion Week, designers have returned to normalcy in their respective homes.
In their absence, fall has arrived, bringing with it colored leaves and cooler temperatures. While city go-getters are replacing their crop tops with trench coats, fall fashion at Michigan State University means a different sort of transformation. Guys are digging out the flannels out of the back of their closets, while girls are cozying up in their favorite yoga pants and zip-ups.
Despite the tempting level of comfort these staple items offer on a lazy morning, the outfit falls flat in a sea of identically dressed college students. With Sept. 22 marking the first day of fall, it’s time to save the sweats for Saturday mornings in front of the television and embrace the upcoming trends.
For the Girls
No.1 Trend: Menswear for women
What’s considered preppy in the men’s department is now considered edgy and fashion forward for women. Ladies are going East Coast collegiate with oxford shoes, cigarette pants and a collared shirt. This look is bound to draw inspiration to study from your preppy alter ego.
No .2 Trend: Dominatrix
In the summer months, “Fifty Shades of Grey” dominated The New York Times Best Sellers list. Following the risqué literary role play, fall 2012 fashionistas will be balancing the femininity of lace with the aggression and bondage of leather. Pull off the ultimate femme fatale with a sophisticated pair of studded heels and killer accessories.
No. 3 Trend: Utilitarian
The utilitarian trend reigns in simplicity. Neutral color tones that once seemed drab have been redesigned with military-esque accents and accessories that make the look easy, yet sophisticated. Combat boots, calf-length skirts and trench coats keep this basic look unique.
For the Boys
No. 4 Trend: Dark Minimalism
The words of the season are smooth, dark and simple. Infiltrate your closet with unadorned, monochromatic shirts and jackets that stress long lines. Ditch the flannel — a jacket will keep you just as warm this fall, and the mysterious minimalism will keep you on top of your trend game.
No. 5 Trend: Denim This fall, trendsetters have modified the blue-collar look and reintegrated denim into the workplace. Varying shades of denim, including some faded shades of red and green, along with a more structured tailoring results in a look that can realistically be brought into a professional setting — or at least a lecture hall.
No. 6 Trend: Leather
Think outside the box this season by adding a leather messenger bag to your daily ensemble or rock a leather bomber jacket on a chilly autumn morning. While the ladies this fall will be all over black leather accents, guys will be leaning toward earthier shades of brown.
