September 6, 2012

The MSU men’s golf team gets their season underway this weekend when they travel to Sugar Grove, Ill., to take on Indiana and Purdue in the Northern Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday.

The Spartans then go to Zionsville, Ind., on Sept. 15-16, to compete in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate along with Illinois and Wisconsin.

The team features three golfers named by the Big Ten as golfers to watch for the 2012-13 season in senior Dan Ellis, senior Dave Ellis sophomore McCormick Clouser.

Dan Ellis finished last season ninth all-time with a 73.06 stroke average and came in the top-20 seven times, including a Spartan-best tie for fifth at the Big Ten championships.

Dave Ellis came only second to his brother last year in scoring average with a 74.16, including an eighth-place finish at the Fossum Invitational, the tournament hosed by MSU. For the second-straight year, he earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholars honors.

As a freshman last year, Clouser appeared in 11 of the 12 events the Spartans took part in, including four top-20 finishes. He had a 74.76 scoring average and came in 18th place in the Big Ten championships, second best on the team.
