September 8, 2012

Mt. Pleasant, Mich. — The No. 11 MSU football team cleaned up at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, knocking off the Chippewas 41-7 Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans rode the hot hand of junior quarterback Andrew Maxwell who was 20-for-31 with 275 yards and two touchdowns on the day after getting off to a bit of a shaky start. Junior wide receiver Bennie Fowler set a personal record with eight receptions for 99 yards and a score, leading the Spartan receiving corps. Junior tight end Dion Sims added the other touchdown for the Spartans in the air near the end of the third quarter.

Junior running back Le’Veon Bell racked up 70 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries before being pulled in the third quarter in favor of the reserve players.

Central Michigan’s only score of the game came when back-up redshirt freshman quarterback Connor Cook threw an interception returned 55 yards by Jason Wilson for a touchdown with 1:39 left in the game.

For the second straight week, MSU’s defense did not give up a touchdown, holding the Chippewas to 245 yards of total offense. Junior defensive end William Gholston was disruptive in the backfield, racking up seven tackles and two tackles for loss, including MSU’s first sack of the season.

The Spartans will return to action Saturday at 8:00 p.m. when they host No. 22 Notre Dame at Spartan Stadium.
