At the Democratic National Convention this week, many key members of the Democratic Party took the stage in an effort to ignite their base and rally support for President Barack Obama during the heart of election season.
Yet one speaker, first lady Michelle Obama, stood out among the crowd as she gave an unforgettable and substantial speech to members of her party.
The content of her speech and the vast support she received highlight Michelle as an integral part of her husband’s campaign, and the essential role the first lady now plays as a key political figure.
Michelle’s speech focused on her husband’s work the past four years and how the country will continue moving forward if Barack is re-elected. Similar to Ann Romney’s speech for her husband, Republican candidate Mitt Romney, Michelle told her husband’s story of humble beginnings and life lessons that made him the man he is today, much like she did four years ago.
Yet she made a distinct contrast between her husband and his competitor, although she did not mention Romney by name, by emphasizing Barack’s rise to success without a wealthy or privileged family.
“Barack knows the American dream because he’s lived it,” she told the convention audience, adding her husband knows and understands the value of hard work and perseverance.
Her speech wowed the crowd and political pundits across America, even bringing some to tears. During the next phase of her husband’s campaign, she most likely will be utilized to give Barack a humanizing factor that will help him connect with voters. Judging by the success of her DNC speech, the campaign should continue to promote the first lady, whose likability could possibly gain her husband independent voters.
But Michelle’s popularity isn’t something the American public is unfamiliar with. In May, Michelle held a 66 percent approval rating according to a Gallup poll. A different Gallup poll her husband with a 44 percent approval rating as of Sept. 2. Granted, Michelle isn’t making the tough decisions her husband makes on a daily basis, but her charm could be helpful in gaining her husband’s re-election this November.
Michelle has remained active as first lady these past four years, starting an anti-childhood obesity campaign called “Let’s Move.” She has been a personal advocate of healthy eating and exercise for kids in an effort to decrease this nation’s staggering childhood obesity rate. She has traveled the country over the past four years to promote this cause.
Yet this popularity also has made her an experienced politician who knows her stuff.
And like many politicians, she has made speech gaffes and blunders over the past four years. She has called America a nation that is “downright mean,” and she made headlines when she hugged the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II, a royal mistake.
But these experiences turned Michelle into a well-versed campaign spokeswoman who is more aware of her actions and words, giving her a slight edge over Ann Romney, who has not had these experiences yet.
Michelle has paved the way for first ladies of the future and the important role they play in America’s political system. The Obama campaign should capitalize off her speech’s success and utilize her during the next few months to help Barack possibly gain independent voters this November.
