‘90s bands release new albums this fall

August 28, 2012

For those who compulsively update their iTunes every few weeks, it’s a relief when their favorite bands release new music often. But when it comes to an album that you’ve waited years for, it makes the listening experience that much sweeter.

Getting fresh music from various artists annually might cause impatience, but sometimes the anticipation makes the arrival all the better. This fall, some favorites of the mid- to -late ‘90s are making a comeback and releasing new albums. Here’s what to expect in the next few weeks.

Sept. 4 — Matchbox Twenty’s “North.” The popular alternative-rock band, nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and VMAs over the years, was off the music radar for the past decade; but they’re back. The record is loaded with new songs expected to showcase lead singer Rob Thomas’ lyrical talent and the band’s ability to adapt to what’s popular in mainstream music, as well as showing their growth. The album title, “North,” is a reference to finding your way home. Although it took about two years to produce, the band found the album’s cohesion and their way back
home.

Sept. 11 — Dave Matthews Band’s “Away from the World.” Since the release of their last album in 2009, frontman Dave Matthews has expressed his skepticism about the tentative future of the band. The album’s artwork is reminiscent of the band’s previous album, “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King,” both of which were designed by Dave Matthews himself.

Sept. 18 — The Killers’ “Battle Born.” More than a year and five producers went into the alternative-rock band’s upcoming album. The hit single, “Runaways,” was so anticipated by radio stations that it was released a week before its scheduled time. After their 2008 album, “Day and Age,” the band embarked on a two-year hiatus. If this single reflects the rest of the album as expected, the time spent apart from each other has led to a refreshed inspiration for music.

Sept. 25 — No Doubt’s “Push and Shove.” After about a decade of separation, the band will return to its ska roots with its new album. Each track, including the single “Settle Down,” has distinctive elements of the ‘80s ska-pop the band grew up withalong with fresh material. Originally scheduled to be released in 2009, the band ended up dedicating almost an entire extra year to perfect the album, which the band promises will be its best work yet.

Sept. 25 — Green Day’s “¡Uno!.” The famous punk trio’s first music since 2009’s “21st Century Breakdown,” “¡Uno!” is something new for the band. The transition from the rock opera albums to power pop provided enough inspiration to fill three albums, two of which are expected to be released within the next five months.
