Duffy Daugherty, Biggie Munn set to be added to Spartan Stadium Ring of Fame

July 9, 2012

MSU announced the newest members of its Ring of Fame on Monday with the addition of former head football coaches Clarence “Biggie” Munn and Hugh Duffy Daugherty.

The coaches, both of whom are inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame, will have their names added to Spartan Stadium’s west upper deck on the Oct. 13 homecoming game against Iowa.

“Clarence ‘Biggie’ Munn and Hugh Duffy Daugherty are truly Michigan State coaching icons and certainly deserving of having their names added to the Spartan Stadium ‘Ring of Fame,’” Athletics Director Hollis said in a statement. “Both men played significant roles in helping shape the future of Michigan State football and, quite frankly, the college game itself.”

Munn won back-to-back national championships in 1951 and 1952 as MSU’s head coach and compiled a 54-9-2 record in seven years on the sideline. He coached 18 first-team All-Americans and also led MSU to the Big Ten co-championship in 1953 — the Spartans’ first year in the conference.

Daugherty, who took over for Munn in 1954, took the program to even greater heights by claiming four national championships in 1955, 1957, 1965 and 1966. The two-time National Coach of the Year in 1955 and 1965 recorded a total record of 109-69-5 over his 19 seasons at the helm of the program.

Other members of the Ring of Fame include Don Coleman, Charles “Bubba” Smith, Gene Washington and Brad Van Pelt.
