Weekend roundup: April 20-22

It is almost the weekend. Classes are ending, and students are ready to unwind. Here is a roundup of events to attend during the weekend respite.

Jazz Spectacular

The College of Music is hosting a jazz spectacular on Friday and Saturday at different campus locations, including Demonstration Hall, the Music Building’s auditorium and Fairchild Theatre.

The event will showcase different jazz performers, including students and professors, in quintets, octets and orchestra-style performances. Friday’s concert with jazz orchestra I, II and III also involves swing dancing.

Ticket prices vary by event and offers discounts for students.

The Land Grant

The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum officials are hosting The Land Grant on Friday and Saturday in East Lansing.

The event is a residency program for artists whose work focuses on food, water and agriculture, with a focus on promoting sustainability.

The program begins at 7 p.m. Friday at 107 South Kedzie with the viewing of the film “The Greenhorns,” a documentary that examines America’s young farming community.

The event will continue from 3-5 p.m. Saturday at the former location of East Lansing’s Barnes & Noble, 333 E. Grand River Ave., with discussions of sustainability with artists, activists and academics, as well as farming and sustainability activities for kids. From 5-7 p.m., the store’s floor will become a farmers’ market with live entertainment.

Record Store Day

The fifth annual Record Store Day is taking place at independent record stores across the nation Saturday, including four local stores: The Record Lounge, 111 Division St.; Flat Black and Circular, 541 E. Grand River Ave.; Replay Entertainment Exchange, 1385 E. Grand River Ave.; and Schuler Books and Music, 1982 Grand River Ave., Okemos.

Record Store Day allows for different record shops to promote rare vinyl, give away records and discount some of their stock, all in an effort to promote and support the culture of the record store.

ParaMorrill Activity

The MSU Paranormal Society partnered with the University Activities Board is hosting a public investigation of paranormal activity beginning at 9 p.m Saturday at Morrill Hall beginning in the Union’s main lounge.

Morrill Hall is the oldest building on campus and set to be demolished early next year. Stories of a reported death in the past that took place in Morrill Hall have surfaced and been spread around campus. In investigating its history and exploring the building, the Paranormal Society is hoping to find abnormal activity.

Groups will leave for the investigations at 9:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. The investigation is free.

Breakdance Club at The Loft

The MSU Breakdance Club is presenting the Red Cedar Ransom 3V3 Battle from 4:30-11:30 p.m. Saturday at The Loft, 414 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing

The Loft is teaming up with the Breakdancing Club to put on the first breakdance competition at The Loft.

The winner will receive a $1,500 grand prize.

Registration for the competition begins at 3 p.m.

The cost to attend is $5.
