Weekend roundup: Dec. 2-4

December 1, 2011

It is almost the weekend. Classes are ending and students are ready to unwind. Here is a roundup of events to attend during the weekend respite.

‘Tis the season:

Lansing area residents will have the chance to enjoy some winter festivities this weekend. On Saturday in East Lansing, Winter Glow will take place from 3-6 p.m. Throughout downtown, winter activities and attractions such as ice carving, a reindeer petting zoo, a holiday farmer’s market, a music tent and more, can be found. For the first time at the annual event, more than 500 luminaries also will be illuminated at 5 p.m., giving city streets that warm holiday glow.

And in Lansing, Old Town will hold its fifth annual Old Town Dickens Village from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. The neighborhood’s streets will be transformed into a Victorian scene where attendees can participate in free and family-friendly activities including horse-drawn carriage rides, ornament and gingerbread house making, caroling, a puppet show and more. There also will be performances by the MSU Russian Chorus and Spartan Sur, as well as a beard and mustache contest held by the Great American Fierce Beard Organization.

Dude Where’s My Sleigh:

The Spartan Dischords will perform their annual holiday concert at 6 p.m. Saturday at Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre. Attendees will get the chance to hear the music of Gavin DeGraw, Maroon 5 and even Jack Frost.

The group, which is MSU’s oldest all-male a cappella act, also will be selling their new album “Better Than Nothing” at the show. A portion of the album’s proceeds will be donated to Toys for Tots.

Tickets to the holiday event are $5 for students and $7 for adults.

Hosted by the University Activities Board, or UAB, this sale will include aromatherapy, clothing, home décor, jewelry, pottery, photography, stained glass and woodwork. Admission to the show is free, and UAB promises those that attend will find great gifts for a wide range of prices.

Home & False Dichotomies:

Two exhibits curated by MSU students will open with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Kresge Art Center’s Gallery 125.

The first display, “Home: Perspectives on the Familiar,” which was created by students in the museum studies class Curatorial Practices, explores the question, “What is home?”

The second, “False Dichotomies: An Aesthetic Challenge” was curated by students in the art history course Rethinking Aesthetics in Art and Everyday Life.

To create their showcase, students borrowed from the collections of the Broad Art Museum, MSU Museum and the MSU Archives.

The exhibit, which is free to the public, will be on display until 8 p.m. Dec. 8.
