Men's and women's golf pick up pair of recruits

November 15, 2011

MSU men’s and women’s golf each signed two golfers for the 2012-13 season last weekend.

Kendall Allen from Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gabby Yurik from Stoney Creek High School in Rochester, Mich., signed with women’s golf, and Sean Friel from Brother Rice High School in Rochester Hills, Mich., and Mitch Rutledge from Whitfield School in St. Louis, signed with men’s golf.

Allen led her golf team to three state championships (2008, 2009, 2011) and holds an individual record in high school of 48-1-1 with 45 medalist honors in a regular-season play.

Allen’s future teammate, Yurik, received medalist honors at the 2011 MHSAA Division 1 Lower Peninsula State Championships with a 153 (78-75). For the second straight year, she led Stoney Creek to a runner-up finish. She was named the No.1 player in the state of Michigan by The Detroit News.

Newly signed men’s golfer Friel is a three-year letterwinner at Brother Rice, where he earned all-state honors each of the last two seasons. As a junior, he was named first-team all-state by the MHSAA and Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association.

Rutledge has lettered for his high school in each year. In the past two years, he led his team to back-to-back Class B state titles. Rutledge earned individual medalist honors at the state tournament as a junior.

Women’s golf head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll and men’s golf head coach Casey Lubahn said in statements to the athletics department they are thrilled to have the new students golf for MSU next year.
