Obama to attend MSU, North Carolina air carrier game

October 13, 2011

Then-Sen Barack Obama, D-Ill., holds an “Obama 08” MSU jersey at his rally Oct. 2, 2008 at Adams Field.

President Barack Obama will have a seat on the USS Carl Vinson this Veterans Day to watch Head Coach Tom Izzo’s Spartans take on North Carolina, an Obama spokesman said in an email to The State News on Thursday.

Shin Inouye, the Director of Specialty Media, said the president is looking forward to a great game between the two teams, which will be the first ever held in an aircraft carrier. The trip will follow Obama’s stop at Arlington National Cemetery to pay respect to U.S. veterans.

The aircraft carrier on which the teams will play is the same that carried Osama bin Laden’s body to his burial at sea after his death in early May.

The game is expected to seat about 6,000 spectators, MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said in a February interview with The Associated Press. Hollis said about 500 tickets would be given to each school, with the rest being reserved for veterans, current servicemen and their families.
