Joe Arbow thinks there was a special force driving the MSU football win against Wisconsin on Saturday.

The finance junior said the presence of ESPN’s College GameDay in East Lansing added some extra hype for both the players and the fans.

“(GameDay) will give us great momentum going in,” Arbow said before the game. “We already beat Michigan last week. We’re going in with a lot of momentum and a lot of force. … Everyone’s hyped up, motivated and ready to go. We’re all behind our team.”

Well, GameDay certainly wasn’t bad luck. Despite broadcaster Lee Corso’s prediction for a Wisconsin win, the Spartans fought the odds and came out victorious with the fans supporting along the way.

For the first time in six years, the GameDay crew packed up their equipment and took over East Lansing. Erin Andrews, Lee Corso, Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, David Pollack and Tom Rinaldi packed up their thermals and bundled up for “chilly” Munn field.

Spartan fans filed in, signs in tow, to witness the live broadcast.

Some die-hard supporters even camped out the night before in anticipation of partaking in the show.

Accounting freshman Nick Baldus was going to get up a 7 a.m. to prepare for GameDay, but he and his friends decided they didn’t want to wait until the morning.

“It was spur of the moment,” Baldus said. “Me and a couple of my friends (camped) out at 12:15 (a.m.) last night and it was, like, 32 degrees all night. It was freezing, but it was definitely worth it.”

Other fans, such as Arbow, chose to catch a few more Z’s and show up in the morning.

“We got there at 4:45 in the morning,” Arbow said. “It paid off, we were there in the front row.”

Regardless of time spent on the field prior to the show, all Spartan fans brought their A-game. There was no shortage of spirit — and no shortage of creativity when it came to sign-making.

In fact, Arbow used GameDay as an opportunity to propose to a member of the ESPN crew.

He proudly sported a sign adorned with “Marry me Erin” directed towards broadcaster Erin Andrews.

“I think she saw it a few times,” Arbow said. “Hopefully she’ll remember me.”

Some signs were a bit more personal, such as “Russell Wilson, the road to the Heisman ends here” and “Russell Wilson sleeps with a night light,” while others boasted green and white pride including “Free Gholston” and “Sparty looks good on Corso.”

The crowd at GameDay showed its Spartan spirit and kept the momentum from the morning rolling straight into the night, ending with a win.

“It was a great atmosphere and everyone was excited to be there,” no-preference freshman Bryan Neville said. “We really showed our school spirit and what Michigan State is all about.”
