‘Bachelor’ star to play concert

October 20, 2011

To many, MSU alumni and former Spartan quarterback Bob Guiney is known as one of the faces of ABC’s “The Bachelor.” But to those who know him best, he also is the musician who started his career in East Lansing on the stage of Rick’s American Café, 224 Abbot Road.

And this Friday, Guiney and his fellow Fat Amy band mates will return to Rick’s for a reunion show at 9:30 p.m.

A musician at heart, Guiney said he always knew he’d end up with a career in the entertainment industry, but he had no idea the twists and turns in his life would lead to a successful career.

“I didn’t even know that this kind of work was out there and was available. So the fact that I get to be working in television and doing the things that I love to do is amazing,” Guiney said.

After leaving Riverview, Mich., the town in which he was born and raised, Guiney moved to East Lansing to attend MSU. By the time he graduated in 1994, he was a member of the band Fat Amy and was touring with the act around the country, performing more than 120 shows a year.

In 1995, Guiney said the band got their lucky break and signed with MCA Records, now part of Interscope Records, and began touring with The Smoking Popes, Matchbox 20, and fellow East Lansing-based band The Verve Pipe.

After several years of traveling and recording music, Guiney said he decided to make the move toward a more stable life and bought a mortgaging company.

It was there that he received his next big break. Without his knowledge, a group of employees decided to submit Guiney’s information to ABC’s “The Bachelor,” a show on which Guiney eventually starred.

After Guiney’s work on “The Bachelor” came to an end, he has continued to work in network television on shows including “Wide World of Soaps” and “The View.”

Guiney said this weekend will be his first time on campus since 2002.

“When the band was first starting we had kind of a permanent residence at Rick’s American Café,” he said. “I’m really excited to come back and see everybody.”

Current manager of Rick’s Scottie Busque attended MSU with Guiney and was working as a bartender when Fat Amy performed there on a regular basis.

“I’m super excited to see everyone coming out for the band,” Busque said. “There is going to be a lot of alumni here, so it will be a great show for them and the MSU students, too.”

MSU alumni Kevin Donathan, will be among the group reuniting this weekend. After meeting in first grade and rooming together their freshman year, Donathan said he and Guiney are still good friends, and he wasn’t surprised that Guiney grew up to be the television icon that he is now.

“If someone had to guess who would become famous out of our group of friends, I think everyone would have said Bob,” Donathan said. “A lot of people thought that he hit his 15 minutes of fame once ‘The Bachelor’ had ended, but that was definitely not the case. He’s worked toward this his whole life.”
