September 8, 2011

The Big Ten champion MSU Women’s Golf team opens its 2011-12 season next week in College Station, Texas for the “Mo” Morial Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. The tournament is held Sept. 11-13, with a practice round on the 10th. Tee times will run from 8-9:45 a.m. for the first and second rounds, and there will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun on the 13th.

MSU joins a field of Auburn, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Kentucky, North Texas, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Tulane and UT-San Antonio for the tournament.

Entering the season, the Spartans are ranked No. 19 by Golfweek, and three golfers have been named Big Ten Golfers to Watch for this season. Sophomore Christine Meier, junior Caroline Powers and senior Lindsey Solberg were tabbed as the players to watch for MSU.

Powers is on pace to become the most highly decorated golfer in MSU women’s history. Last season, Powers was named a first-team All-Big Ten selection and was an honorable mention for NGCA All-American honors.
