Men's golf places 5th at shortened Inverness Intercollegiate

September 27, 2011

Led by senior Dan Ellis, the MSU men’s golf team placed fifth in the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio, shooting 11-over 295 par in the shortened match.

The tournament was shortened to 18 holes instead of the usual 36 and postponed from the original Monday date to Tuesday because of inclement weather in the area.

Ellis tied for fourth place in the tournament, shooting a par of 71, marking his third straight week with a top five placing. He also had four birdies to help propel his team over No. 5 Florida and conference rivals Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. No. 31 Kent State took home the tournament title, shooting a combined 3-over par 287.

Freshman McCormick Clouser notched his first career top-ten finish, tying for seventh place with a 1-over par 72, while junior Matthew Moseley placed in the top 20, shooting a 3-over par 74. Senior Chris Mory and junior Will Morris completed the Spartans’ line-up, shooting a 7-over par 78 and an 8-over par 79, respectively. The tournament marked Mory’s lowest finish so far this season as he tied for 46th place.

Sophomore Carson Castellani tied for 25th in the individual contest, shooting a 4-over par 75.

The Spartans will return to play on Oct. 3 when they travel to Daufuskie Island, S.C., for the two-day Rees Jones Collegiate Invitational.
