Men's golf places 2nd at Fossum Invite

September 5, 2011

The MSU men’s golf team stumbled out of the gates this season, finishing second in the 2011 Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course this weekend.

IUPUI won the tournament with an 11-over par 875.

The Spartans turned in three matching 293-shot rounds to finish the weekend with a 15-over 879. Oakland finished a distant third by turning in a 28-over 892 for the weekend (291-299-302).

“We didn’t play the easier holes well,” said Casey Lubahn, who made his coaching debut this weekend.

MSU was led by seniors Dan Ellis and Chris Mory, who were involved in a five-way tie for third place at 2-over par 218.

Freshmen McCormick Clouser and Patrick Colburn both made their collegiate debuts this weekend. Clouser matched Ellis with a tournament-leading 38 pars, finishing with a five-over par 221, which was good for a share of 12th place. Colburn tied for 18th with a seven-over par 223.

Despite not walking away with the tournament championship, Lubahn said the weekend was not a total loss, and he still likes what he sees from the 2011 team.
