Fossum Invitational kicks off men's golf season at Forest Akers West

September 1, 2011

The Spartans men’s golf team hosts the Fossum Invitational on Sept. 3-4 at Forest Akers West Golf Course. First-year coach Casey Lubahn will make his coaching debut for MSU this weekend and will begin to try to improve his team from last season.

The Fossum Invitational is entering its 44th season. Founded in 1966, the tournament is considered by the College Golf Foundation/Rolex Golf Tour as one of the top 75 collegiate golf tournaments in the country.

Michigan State has come away as winners of the Fossum Invitational 10 times in its history and currently is on a three-year winning streak. The Spartans won the tournament in 2007, 2009, 2010 and shared the title with Ferris State last season. The tournament was not held in 2008 as the Big Ten Championship was held at Forest Akers West.

The Spartans will head to Ann Arbor Sept. 12-13 to compete in the Wolverine Invitational, their second tournament of the season.

Coach Lubahn has history in bringing golf programs to prominence. In his past three years at Miami (Ohio) he lead the RedHawks to three tournament wins, five runner-up and 14 top-5 finishes. Michigan State golf has sunk to No. 141 on Golfweek’s ranking of all collegiate golf programs.
