University to decide use of bricks from MSC smokestack

June 30, 2011

Starting in mid-August, approximately 500-600 red bricks salvaged during the demolition of the historic MSC smokestack will be available for purchase at the MSU Surplus Store.

Gail DeGood, a spokesperson for the MSU Surplus Store, said the bricks will be sold at either $25 or $50 a piece and will include a certificate of authenticity. She added the store only would receive bricks from the bottom of the demolished structure.

University engineer Bob Nestle said bricks from the bottom of the smokestack are easier to salvage, and that is why they have been chosen as bricks to be sold.

DeGood said the store would be unable to set a concrete date for when the bricks go on sale until the bricks are received. Nestle said the bricks will not be delivered to the store until August.

The smokestack has been under demolition since May 9 and is scheduled to end in mid-August.

In continuance with a plan set by the university, the white bricks that made up the lettered “MSC” along the side of the smokestack were salvaged and are being stored at the Physical Plant on the south side of campus.

“A decision is yet to be made on what (the white bricks) are to be used for,” Nestle said.
