MSU lineman returns to field after fighting cancer

April 7, 2011

MSU offensive lineman Arthur Ray Jr. has been added to the active spring roster Thursday after undergoing a bout with bone cancer.

Ray said in an MSU Athletic Communications release the news brought him to tears.

“I was in class, and I just cried tears of joy,” Ray said. “I called my mom. It’s the best feeling in the world right now.”

Ray was diagnosed with cancer in March 2007, shortly after signing with the Spartans out of Chicago’s Mount Carmel High. Following multiple surgeries since his diagnosis, it appears his return to the football field is complete after the NCAA granted a waiver on his behalf and he was scheduled to practice Thursday.

Being back on the field meant more than just playing again, Ray said in the release.

“It was the greatest feeling in the world. It felt so good because it just represents so much now,” he said. “I just feel like I have to represent everybody that’s still dealing with bad things, like chemo. I still remember some of my guys that are still in the hospital.”

Ray, who was ranked the No. 18 offensive guard in the country by the recruiting website Rivals.com, signed a national letter of intent on Feb. 7, 2007, to play at MSU. He was diagnosed with the most common type of bone cancer on his left tibia the next month.

Since treatment, he’s been working to walk, run and compete, and is known for his upbeat demeanor. During the 2008 season, Ray spent time riding the stationary bike, actively watching his fellow offensive linemen and watching video with teammates to prepare himself to play.

Teammates were happy to have Ray back in action.

“I had a great one (reception), phenomenal,” Ray said. “Coach (Dantonio) announced it, and everybody clapped. It’s good to have the support.”
